Opcode's OMS (Open Music System) & Mac OS X

An extremely brief history of OMS

  • 1985 - Opcode Systems Inc. is founded and starts developing MIDI Interfaces and Sequencers for Apple and PC platforms.
  • 1987 - Opcode hires Doug Wyatt as a software engineer.
  • 1990 - Doug begins authoring Opcode MIDI System (OMS).
  • 1993 - MOTU releases freeMIDI as competition to OMS; OMS becomes freeware and is renamed 'Open Music System'.
  • 1998 - Gibson buys Opcode.
  • 1999 - Development of Opcode's product line ceases. OMS halts at version 2.3.8
  • 2000 - Our friend, Doug Wyatt, is hired by Apple Computer to head the MIDI services development under Mac OS X.
  • Aug. 2002 - The release of MacOS 10.2 (Jaguar) has MIDI capabilities fully integrated into at the OS level, This includes an "IAC Driver" (Inter-Application Communication) that allows MIDI apps to talk to one another by way of a "Virtual MIDI Cable". (Applications -> Utilities -> AudioMIDI Setup)

IN SHORT: OMS is not (and will likely never be) available for OS X.

Update! I've recently discovered that Trioka Tronix have released a MIDI utility that serves to bridge the gap between OMS dependent applications and OS X. It is available for download at their website and is (appropriately) named MIDIBridge9X.
