Mac OS X MIDI Applications

Why can't I find Opcode's OMS (Open Music System) for OS X ?

Rondo - Shareware - Author's Homepage
Rondo is a really cool MIDI Player with very robust features. In addition to handling every MIDI file I threw at it, it also displays a scrolling piano roll as the song plays (Cool factor: 9). As an extra bonus you can view characteristics of the MIDI file (i.e., velocity, aftertouch, Control Changes). Visually it is modelled after iTunes so it feels right at home on first launch. If you are looking for a nice MIDI player, this is my top choice.

Plogue Bidule v0.6600 - 5.7MB - Beta - Author's Homepage
Wow! This app is a must have! Bidule is a realtime modular creation studio. What does this mean? Well, you start with an empty "environment" and a palette choke full of various Audio and MIDI modules. The idea is this, drag a module onto your environment and start making connections. For example, drag over a MIDI IN module and an Analog Drum module. Connect the MIDI IN to your drum and (bham!), you've got an instance MIDI triggerable Drum machine. Here comes the best part: ReWire support! There are several modules to choose from letting your route just about anything to anywhere. This app has a vast swath of creative possibilities. In addition to ReWire support, Bidule also offers VST/VSTi and AU support. This app will be commercial soon, but exists as a free download while in beta.

EarTrainer X 1.1 - 1.5Mb - Shareware
Developed by the Jazz Composition professor at the University of Miami's esteemed Jazz Studies program, EarTrainer X is an educational application that was designed for the composer/improvisor in need of increased skills in the aural identification of modal melodic and harmonic materials. The app creates an infinite number of examples of tetrachords, modes, scales, and single or groups of modal chords. The examples are displayed on staves as with any notation program for the checking of answers.
There are three levels of difficulty with the third containing some very advanced and beautiful modal chords. As a bonus, some of the examples in the multiple chord level could be developed into compositions putting the app in the agorithmic-composition category.

Patterns X 1.0 - 628Kb - Shareware
Patterns X is the software equivalent to the much acclaimed book "Patterns For Jazz" by Jerry Coker et al. An infinite number of melodic shapes and patterns are created for use as practice materials or compositional needs. Categories include: Random Symmetric Patterns, PreSet Patterns, Random modal shapes, Random scaler shapes, Symmetric Modal/Scaler sequences, and Preset Modal/Scaler sequences. There are options for manipulation of the results by transposition, and inversion of interval direction and reversal of melodic direction, all of which yield some interesting and beautiful results. The examples are displayed on staves as with any notation program.

Numerology - Download available soon from Five12
Numerology is a revolutionary new MIDI sequencer from a small company named Five12. It is a modular sequencing environment designed for performing musicians. It works by giving the user an organized workspace within which they can quickly create and connect together a variety of highly functional sequencing and MIDI event generating modules. As a fully modular environment, the user can construct sequencing instruments that fit their own unique and twisted requirements. The sequencers follow a model similar to that used by analog sequencers: the user creates sequences of control values that can be routed to other modules to control generation of notes or MIDI CC and Pitch Bend messages.
NOTE: I do not have this program available as a download because it is a commercial product

MIDIKeys 1.5 - 76Kb - Freeware - Author's Homepage
MIDIKeys is a useful utility app that displays a four octave keyboard on screen by which you can play with your Mac keyboard (letters 'z' - ','). Another cool feature is that is can accept MIDI notes from a source (an external synth, a soft synth) and see the notes highlight on the onscreen keyboard (great for verifying MIDI signals received).

µMIDI Contoller 2.5 - 623Kb - Shareware - Author's Homepage
µMIDI Contoller is a damn cool app that lets you assign mouse movements and keyboard events to MIDI events. For example, you can assign the Y-axis of your mouse to send to a particular control change (say a resonance filter on your synth) and the X-axis to a different contol change (say the filter cut-off). Spinning the mouse arbitrarily will then send CC messages galore to the synth. Fun fun fun. =)
